2005 Mazda Miata Turbo Project

All new interior, minor restoration, Kraken turbo kit, and upgraded clutch

When I was younger I thought Miata's were slow, girl cars but now that I'm older I've grown to really appreciate light-weight traditional sports cars. I've learned a lot by paying close attention to some of my hero's like Gordon Murray and Christian von Koenigsegg. Gordon Murray has always had a design philosophy where light weight takes precedent. Christian still daily drives a 1992 Miata even though he builds multi-million dollar megacars.

I have a lot of work to do on this page. I'll be adding more and more photos of the work progress. Trying to figure out GoDaddy's terrible site editor. It's very limited.

CURRENT PROJECT STATUS:

The turbo kit from Kraken took longer than expected to ship so the plan is to finish the interior, stereo, and Flyin' Miata clutch kit then drive the car over Summer with stock power.

Working on (4/6/25):

  • Refinishing motor mounts and replacing with Flyin Miata semi-solid rubbers
  • Bluetooth head unit and center gauge pod install
  • Interior under felt kit, and carpet install
  • Mounting custom Marrad seats

The Project

clutch

Clutch Upgrade

To handle the power post-turbo the OEM clutch had to be upgraded. I chose to upgrade to the Flyin' Miata Stage 1 clutch and flywheel. Inside I go into detail with my experience and you can see more pics.

shift knob

Sift Knob

I've always been a fan of a meaty shift knob (no homo). I bought a cheap shift knob on Amazon and wanted to mount it more securely than using those wobbly plastic inserts and set screws. A have a few more details and pics inside. Would I do it again? hmm.

red center caps

Homemade Center Caps

Those aren't pepperoni. I bought a set of inexpensive flow formed, light weight wheels. I just didn't like the logo for a Chinese company on the center caps so I made these. It was a bigger project than I intended but I'm an expert at spray painting now, so there's that.

Motor Mounts

While I have access to everything I figured it would be worthwhile to replace and upgrade the motor mounts. I opted to use Mazda Competition rubbers and refinished the mounts. See more inside.
